Make an API key

Make a CueStride API key in Account settings, step by step with pictures: its reach, what it may do, links, the secret, and how to stop it.

Last checked against CueStride on 27 October 2026.

A tool reaches the API with a key. An admin of the account makes keys in the app, and each key says what it may reach and do. You need to be an admin of the account, and the steps take a minute.

1. Open Account settings

Sign in at the app and choose Account settings in the bar at the top. On a phone, it is in the menu under your initials.

The app's top bar: the account's name, then Rooms, Screens, Sponsors, and Account settings, and who is signed in.
Account settings is the last link in the top bar, and only an admin sees it.

2. Find API keys

Scroll to API keys, the last section. It shows how many keys the account has of the number its plan holds, the Make a key button, and a row for each key:

The API keys section: three keys of ten used, the Make a key button, and four keys, each with its label, its reach, what it may do, the last characters of its secret, and when it was made and last used.
Each row says where the key reaches, what it may do, whether it works in links, the last four characters of its secret, and when it was last used.

A key’s ⋯ menu has Replace secret and Revoke.

3. Make the key

Choose Make a key and fill in the form:

The Make an API key form, filled in for a Stream Deck: its label, one room, read and run the show, and Allow in links ticked.
A key for a Stream Deck: one room, allowed to run the show but not to edit it, and allowed in links.
  • Label: a name to know the key by, such as the tool and the room it is for.
  • Reach: every room, or one room picked from the list. Give a key only the rooms it needs.
  • What it may do: pick the least your tool needs. A tool that only shows the time reads; a button that starts timers runs the show.
  • Allow in links: only for a tool that can do no more than open a link, such as a Stream Deck’s Website action. A button link says why it needs care.
  • Expires: optional. A key for one event can stop by itself when the event is over.

Then choose Make the key.

4. Copy the secret

The key’s secret starts with csk_. The app shows it once, now, as dots until you choose the eye. Choose Copy and paste it where your tool keeps its settings.

The new key's dialog: its secret hidden as dots, an eye to show it, a Copy button, and Done.
Copy the secret before you choose Done: CueStride keeps only a hash of it and cannot show it again.

Keep the secret as you would a password. If you lose it, or it may have been seen, choose Replace secret in the key’s menu: you get a new secret, and the old one keeps working until the new one is first used, or until a day has passed, so a show running on it is not cut off.

Stop a key

  • Revoke in a key’s menu stops it at once, in every room. Revoke all keys, under the list, stops every key of the account.
  • In a room’s Room settings, its controller can untick Let API keys reach this room, during a show if a tool misbehaves. Every key is refused in that room until it is ticked again.
  • A key’s stream shows in the room’s Live connections as API · and its label, where an admin can also revoke it.

Next

With the secret copied, send your first requests.

Your next show, on time.

Put a room's link on a screen and run the show; sign up free when you want to keep it.
